2. very thick paper! i get them at micheals for about $5 for 600 sheets all diffrent colors, sizes and styles!
3. any paper is good paper.... let your imagination run free!! which ever paper appeals to you the most, is the best paper.
make sure it is archival safe (acid and lignin free), meaning that it will last through the years. almost all papers sold for scrapbooking will be archival safe already, so i wouldn't really worry about it. Have fun!!!

i would deffinately suggest going out and buying an issue of simple scrapbooks - one of the best magazines out there for scrapping - and looking in the back for more sites as well as using the magazine for ideas
5. 12x12 paper is best for scrapbooking, as you can get albums that will fit the paper in nicely, plus you can get some lovely papers,
